Study A Language
If you need to learn a new language, there are language schools all over the
UK which can help you achieve your goal. Of course, finding a language school
is the easy part and the real hard work inevitably comes when the
course actually begins. That is not to say that learning a language isn't
fun because it is both enjoyable and rewarding. If you take the classes in a
group setting, it is also a fantastic opportunity to meet new people. The vast
majority of language courses in the United Kingdom cater for the European languages,
along with Japanese, Chinese and Arabic.
If you choose to learn
Spanish, a whole new world will be opened up to you. Actually, to put in
more succinctly, the whole New World will be opened up to you as the
majority of South and Central American countries have Spanish as their first
language. With the steady flow of northward emigration from Central America,
whole towns in the United States also have Spanish as their primary language
and Telenovelas are the order of the day.
If you have your eyes set on travelling in South America, the other major language
spoken on the continent is Portuguese. If you can already speak Spanish, it
is not too difficult to learn
Portuguese, although the sounds are different and there are points of diversion
within the two Romance languages. Brazil
is the largest and most populated country in South America and Portuguese is
the official language. Football is another.
Almost every language
school in Britain offers a course to learn
French. Our closest continental neighbours are still the most active opponents
of the spread of English as the de facto international Lingua Franca in the
early twenty first century. This means that it is very important to learn French
if you are either considering living in the country (as an increasing number
of Britons do each year) or dealing with French businesses. Of course, French
is a beautiful language and far more sensual than English.
The Gallic gripe with the international dominance of English may well be short
lived. Many experts are speculating that Mandarin will replace English before
2050. Forward-thinking Westerners are taking courses to learn
Chinese in greater numbers than ever before. As the country truly asserts
itself on a world stage, many people are interested to see whether Chinese culture
will come to cover the globe as comprehensively as American culture
(and the English language) did during the 20th Century.
English, however, remains the most commonly taught language on the planet.
Courses to learn
English are compulsory in many schools around the world and many more people
choose to study the language independently as a means of 'getting ahead' because
it is perceived as essential for business success.
