Unique Look at the Definition of Courage

What's your definition of courage?

In the online version of Webster's, it says that courage is:

"That quality of mind which enables one to encounter danger and difficulties with firmness, or without fear, or fainting of heart; valor; boldness; resolution."

Probably the most dominant idea of courage is the physical realm.

You may look at someone who can parachute or fly an airplane as someone with courage.

However, I look at the definition of courage with your mental capabilities at the forefront.

"Conscience is the root of all true courage; if a man would
be brave let him obey his conscience."

- James Freeman Clarke

Courage is having the conscience to do what's right even when doing what's right is painful.

Definition of Courage
When Life Throws You for a Loop

It takes courage to go through this experience we call life, doesn't it?

Sometimes it seems that just as things are going as well as you ever hoped they would, a challenge arises.

Some challenges you take on and defeat relatively quickly. Maybe you already have experience with that type or it's just a minor "life roadblock".

Others, however, can knock you right on your "you know what"!

There are life challenges that make you wonder, "Why do I even try? What's the point of living?"

This is where confidence and self esteem come in. This is where you've got to dig down and remember who you truly are inside. Let's look at the definition of courage as explained by Dorothy Thompson:

"Courage, it would seem, is nothing less than the power to overcome danger, misfortune, fear, injustice, while continuing to affirm inwardly that life with all its sorrows is good; that everything is meaningful even if in a sense beyond our understanding; and that there is always tomorrow."

Definition of Courage
Integrity to Yourself

"With courage you will dare to take risks, have the strength
to be compassionate, and the wisdom to be humble.
Courage is the foundation of integrity."
- Keshavan Nair

I like the above quote by Keshavan Nair because if you don't have your integrity, what do you have?

When you have the courage to stand by what you believe in, you feel "whole" inside. Even when it's hard to stick to your beliefs, you come out the other end respecting yourself.

Many times in your life, you're going to have to expand yourself outside of what's safe. You're going to encounter situations where it'll be easier to betray your morals.

However, if you can be courageous during those experiences and have the self confidence to be true to yourself, you'll be rewarded.

No, you won't win some earthly reward with millions of people watching on TV.

You'll win inside your soul. You'll feel comfortable living within "your skin". You'll come one step closer to knowing your higher self as your earthly ego fades away.

Overcome Your Fear Through Awareness

I never said this was easy, though.

Just like you, I understand everything I've written on this page from personal experience. Knowing the definition of courage and actually expressing it during times of stress are two different things.

As always, the first step is awareness. Be aware of your fear in unfamiliar territory.

Once your fear is sensed by your higher Being, you can separate your true essense from it, understanding that you are not the emotion. Have the courage to feel the fear and then the confidence and self esteem to let it go.

This is all part of realizing your own personal spiritual emergence.

"It takes a lot of courage to release the familiar and seemingly secure, to embrace the new. But there is no real security in what is no longer meaningful. There is more security in the adventurous and exciting, for in movement there is life, and in change there is power."
- Alan Cohen

Change your life,
