Overcome Your Fear of Change
If this one hasn’t stopped you dead in your tracks once or twice in your life, then you’re simply not human ;-) Being afraid to upset the “apple cart” is something we all suffer from. Basically, it’s the unknown that you fear. The older I get, the more it amazes me how the unknown creates so much worry. It amazes me because when I look back on my life, I see how most of my worries never came to pass. On the contrary, many times the changes I feared ended up having a silver lining attached. Here’s the thing, you can’t live your life thinking “What if?” all the time. At some point you simply need to quiet the anxious and worrisome thoughts that you allow to ramble around in your mind. Yes, you allow those thoughts to haunt you. Once you understand that, you can begin to change the negative thinking. Take a moment to think back on your life. Think about a time when you went through a major change. Sure, bad things happen. Some of the things you worry about actually do happen. I realize that ;-) However, don’t you come out of some of those situations and think back about how something totally unexpected and positive came from it? When I was sixteen, my Dad got a new job in a new city. All of a sudden, I had to leave all my friends and girlfriend. I was devastated. I lived in anger for the last two years of high school. But you know what? Those two years were negative because I allowed them to be. Looking back, I see how much stronger that experience made me. As I grew older, I began to realize how my fear of change wasn’t as powerful as it was before that experience of moving away from everything I knew. As new life changes came and went, I didn’t obsess about the “what ifs” as much. Sure, I still worry about the unknown in my life, but the feelings come and then I forge ahead… wondering all the while what silver lining some of the negative experiences may hold in store for my future self. I think this Erica Jong quote sums things up nicely… Acceptance is big part of living a happy and abundant life. Accept that everything isn’t always rosy. Accept that life takes you through changes, twists, and turns. Leave the worry behind… stop being afraid to LIVE YOUR LIFE and find the silver lining when things go sour on you. And never forget that your “reality” is all in your mind… which direction will you allow your mind to take you today? Change your life, Matt
