Secret of Happiness - Have You Forgotten the Secret of Happiness?

Do you know the secret of happiness?

I think it's a bit difficult to define a general definition on true happiness that fits you, myself, and everyone else.

You and I enjoy different aspects of life. You may find happiness in one area, while I may find it somewhere else entirely.

However, while tackling this idea of the secret of happiness, I've come to the conclusion that there are some universal ideas on the subject.

Although you and I could be as different as humanly possible regarding our specific life interests, there are universal truths that we can both think about that lead to true happiness.

Secret of Happiness
Materialism

In our day and age, we've been led to believe that "more is better". I've fallen victim to this brainwashing I feel we've all been exposed to thanks to huge corporations trying to sell us their stuff.

I'm sure you've fallen victim to this line of thinking, too.

But, we're not victims unless we allow ourselves to be. It's time to ask whether more is really better. Can we find true happiness through the next car, house, shirt, CD, DVD player, movie, or big screen TV that we buy?

I think not. In my experience, there is a moment of joy as we enjoy our new "thing", then it becomes just another piece of stuff in our possession.

Secret of Happiness
Looking "Out There"

Materialistic pursuit of happiness is a pursuit to find it outside of ourselves. Is this really possible, though? Are you really going to find happiness through something outside of yourself?

No. You're going to find true happiness inside.

One thing you can do starting today is to invest time in quiet reflection or meditation. As you quiet your mind and reflect on the spiritual being inside, you'll begin to discover that everything you need for inner peace or happiness is already there.

Combining these ideas of materialism and looking everywhere but inside for inner peace, understand that you're preventing your higher self from being a part of your everyday life.

As you focus on approval from others, rewards, money and accumulations, you place your happiness in the hands of everything but yourself. Take back this control as you focus on inner peace.

Amazingly, when you focus on quiet inner peace, much of that stuff you used to focus on just falls in your lap anyway because you've balanced your spiritual energy.

Secret of Happiness
Appreciation

When you can just appreciate all that you already have, you've taken a big step in discovering the secret of happiness.

Rather than focusing on "getting more", appreciating all that is good about your life settles your spiritual self into a state of inner peace. You really will begin to feel true happiness as you take your mind off the "superficial wants".

Spend time each day going over all that you're appreciative of. Is there a relationship in your life that you cherish? Did you find time for a walk today? Appreciate it! Feel blessed in the little things in your life.

As I began to think along these lines, I began to see how much what many people would take as insignificant really filled me up inside. Taking a walk, a great meal my wife made me (this is especially big since my cooking is awful ;-), making the scowling store clerk smile, a phone call to a friend, my hair looked good today.

Yes, you can be appreciative of silly things like your hair. Just find something each day that you can appreciate about yourself. As you do this day after day, you begin to see that striving for more is fine as long as you understand that it's not vital to how you define yourself and your happiness.

Secret of Happiness
You As A Child

Very simply, what gave you true happiness as a child? Was it really all those new toys and stuff you got at Christmas? Was it really that?? Is that what brings a smile to your face as you reflect on your memories?

Or, do your best childhood memories come when you think about all that you already possessed?

I know when I think back, I think about the times I spent with my parents, or my brother, or other people in my family. I think about funny things I did with my friends.

Basically, as kids we were simply being appreciative of each moment, cherishing all that was good about our lives and ourselves.

When did this secret of happiness get lost?

When did you forget this so simple secret of happiness?

Change your life,

Matt
