Skills Follow Belief - Control Belief in Your Mind and Skills Follow
It shouldn't come as a surprise that skills follow belief.
Skills are important, yes. If you're not proficient in whatever area you're working at, success will be hard to find.
However, skills follow belief because without confidence, skills really mean nothing.
Professional sports can give us a look into this theory regarding belief and skills.
Obviously, in order to reach such a top level a professional athlete must have top skills. But how many times have you seen a pro athlete fall into a "slump" where they just seem to get uncharacteristically dominated by the opposition?
Did their skills all of a sudden go away?
No, the skills are still there, but something happened upstairs in the mind. For whatever reason, the athlete loses the belief that they're good at what they do.
Skills follow belief. Belief comes from what's happening in your mind. If you're struggling with your thinking, your self confidence suffers.
So, if your skills follow belief and you're having trouble with your thinking, what can you do to pull yourself out of your rut?
Skills Follow Belief Get Away From Your Struggles
One effective method for re-discovering self confidence is to first get away from whatever it is that you're struggling with.
For example, sometimes I find myself at a total loss as to what to write on my site. While I enjoy working on it immensely, sometimes I just feel like there's a black hole within me and I have absolutely nothing worthy to pass on.
I used to fight this and try to work through it, sometimes causing more frustration.
I believe that I have something to say that can help you. But I've learned there are times when I need to step away in order to gather strength, perspective, and new experiences that will give me something new to bring to the table, so to speak.
So, when I feel at a loss as to what to write, I just focus on other areas of interest that I have: reading, playing my guitar, running, etc.
The next thing I know, I'm rejuvenated and ready to roll again. My belief in my ideas is back. My skill was always there, but my belief needed some help.
Skills Follow Belief Get to Work
"Our belief at the beginning of a doubtful undertaking is the one thing that assures the successful outcome of any venture." - William James
Sometimes it takes a little sweat and perseverance to break out of a rut and regain self confidence in your skills.
In direct contradiction to the above example, I sometimes just pick a subject and start writing when I feel like there's nothing inside me. It's the exact opposite approach to the "getting away" method of re-discovering faith, belief, and self confidence in yourself.
Fighting through is what you may need to do at some point. This all goes back to spiritual growth and understanding yourself.
As I've mentioned, your mind and your thinking is the key to making the best of your skills. There are times when just making the effort stimulates something magical where your creative juices start flowing.
All of a sudden, instead of feeling inadequate, you re-discover why you love working on your passion, whatever it may be. Your mind is filled with ideas and you find yourself on a roll.
Remember, skills follow belief. If you're in a rut and lacking self confidence, sometimes you just have to force yourself back into the game and you'll be on your way.
Without a doubt, skills follow belief. Believe it!
Change your life,
Matt
