Guilt - What to do About GuiltWhat to do about guilt… Is this something you find yourself asking quite often? Unfortunately, we live in a world where guilt is something you must protect yourself from. Unlike some of the topics I discuss on my site, this is an area I’ve always recognized from an early age. I always picked up on the idea that guilt was used by some to make others feel terrible… thus those using it gained power over those feeling the negative emotion. Of course, this doesn’t mean I’m immune to guilt… no, I’ve tortured myself just like you do with feeling this unique anger towards myself. Plenty… and still do ;-) - Peter McWilliams Decide to Head it Off at the Pass I’m not going to go into all the reasons you feel guilt. You know just as well as I do that you can find guilt anywhere. Religious leaders, schoolteachers, politicians, friends, spouses, children… You can find an excuse to feel guilty because of relationships with those you love just as you can from those who profess to be our leaders. What you need to start learning is that guilt has no positive place in your life. When you allow yourself to feel this way, you’re simply beating yourself up over one thing or the other that did or didn’t happen in the past. Remember, the past is a ghost. It’s a ghost that your ego loves to hold onto and use to bring an enormous amount of negative feelings into being for you to feel and hold onto. There’s no way to handle guilt other than making a conscious decision to handle it each time it comes up. I made this decision years ago and although I still feel guilt often, I’m now able to head it off as soon as it rears its ugly head. It happened just last night… I had gone to a real estate seminar to further my knowledge. Driving home I couldn’t stop kicking myself for not starting my real estate investing at a younger age. I was feeling guilty for allowing myself to get sidetracked on other avenues that kept me from becoming financially independent sooner. However, I recognized immediately what I was doing to myself and told myself to knock it off… The person I was back then was exactly who I was supposed to be in order for me to become the person I am today. So what if my goals happened later than I think they were supposed to? They still happened, right? And that’s exactly what you have to do. What to do about guilt? Decide to head it off at the pass. Decide that nothing and no one (especially yourself) will be allowed to get you off track of living an abundant life.
